Place the tape player.
  • Put the tape player in an area where you can write or type
  • Make sure that you can easily reach the player for pausing the tape to write
Place the tape player close to where you will take notes.
Prepare to take notes.
  • Get your writing or typing materials together.
  • Sit down with the player and begin playing the tape.

1 First listen: Outline.
  • Outline the major topics or concepts of the lecture
  • As you play the taped lecture
  • Focus on listening and remembering what was said in class.
Listen 3 times.  1: Outline the lecture.  2: Write down details 3: Listen for understanding.
2 Second listen: Details.
  • Write the supporting details
  • under the major topics you recorded the first time.
  • Write down the major topics or concepts of the leture
3 Third listen: Comprehension.
  • Take a break from listening for at least a couple of hours.
  • While you are cleaning or doing something that allows you to listen,
  • listen to the taped lecture a third time.
  • Use this time to test yourself to see if you can remember where the lecture goes.
